Edo decides: PDP blasts Buhari for congratulating Obaseki

Ossai Ovie Success Blog

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s congratulatory message to the newly elected governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, has finally revealed his hand in the election.

The party in a statement Friday said it had noted with “sadness” that Mr. Buhari had never extended similar congratulatory messages or goodwill to PDP candidates who were victorious in various elections since he assumed office.

“In Bayelsa State where his party with the support of security agencies virtually declared war on Governor Seriake Dickson and the people of Bayelsa, the President refused to congratulate the PDP candidate who against all odds managed to survive the APC onslaught,” the party said.

“His aides claimed then that the President was not in the business of congratulating election winners. Why the sudden change of heart now if we may ask? The only plausible explanation is that the President was eager to confer legitimacy on an otherwise badly flawed election in which his party acted like Shina Rambo, the notorious Armed Robber. Only that this time they were robbing the people of their votes,” PDP said.

The party said the action of the president belies his statement that he belongs to nobody but belongs to everybody. It said Mr. Buhari has shown where he belongs.

“We recall that President Jonathan dutifully never failed to congratulate opposition candidates who won elections during his tenure, including Adams Oshiomhole. That is what is expected of a statesman.

“We did not lose the gubernatorial election in Edo State. We can therefore not be described as ‘bad losers’ according to the APC State Chairman in Edo State, Anselm Ojezua. We were robbed by very shameless election riggers.

“We fully support the Edo Chapter of the PDP in the total rejection of the election results. We also fully endorse their determination to employ all legitimate means to reclaim their stolen mandate,” PDP said in the statement signed by its spokesperson, Dayo Adeyeye.

PDP said Nigeria’s democracy is in danger with the advent of the Buhari administration. It said no election had been free and fair since Mr. Buhari came on board.

“We go for elections as if we are going to war; and virtually all elections conducted by INEC have been either inconclusive or blatantly rigged.

“Today Rivers State has no representation in the National Assembly. No thanks to the powers that be. If we do not collectively rise to resist this anti-people onslaught we might as well say bye bye to democracy,” the party said.

Kogi Election: Why we dismissed Faleke’s appeal – Supreme Court

Ossai Ovie Success Blog

The Supreme Court on Friday explained why it dismissed the appeal of James Faleke of the All Progressive Congress (APC) on the Kogi governorship elections because the reliefs sought were “aberration, not known to law”.

The court dismissed the suit on September 20 saying it was “frivolous”. It also ruled against a different appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Idris Wada.

Seven judges unanimously dismissed the three appeals, which respectively contesting the return of Gov. Yahaya Bello of the APC.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun who read the lead judgment on in Mr. Faleke’s case on Friday, said the court dismissed the appeal because his claims were not supported by any existing laws.

“This is a simple law. Since the election had not been completed and the final results issued by the electoral body, Faleke, as a running mate, cannot claim ‎victory in the election,” she said.

She held that Mr. Faleke was not qualified to benefit the votes the APC scored in the contest before the death of the party’s governorship candidate, Audu Abubakar, because he did not meet the condition precedent.

Mrs. Kekere-Ekun said Mr. Faleke neither obtained nomination form nor substantively participated in the APC governorship primaries.

She said that INEC had already declared the election inconclusive before Mr. Audu’s sudden death.

Giving reasons in support of Mr. Bello’s qualification, the judge held that the Electoral Act gives room for substitutions of candidates on account of either death or withdrawal.

She said the law gives powers to political parties to take full charge of the process of selection of candidates for elections, adding that the court lacked the jurisdiction to stop them.

Mrs. Kekere-Ekun, therefore, held that the substitution of the late governorship candidate of the party with Mr. Bello was apt.

“Nothing can be more apt as the governor had fully participated in the governorship primary election of the APC and came second after Abubakar,” she said.

“Unlike Faleke who did not meet that condition, but was simply selected to be a deputy governor.

“By virtue of the provisions of Section 221 of the 1999 Constitution it is the political parties that actually contest elections.

“The governor having become candidate of APC, and legally sponsored by the same party can lay claim to the votes scored by the party in the Nov. 21, 2015 poll,’’ she held.

Mr. Faleke, the running mate to Mr. Abubakar had filed the appeal against Mr. Bello’s victory in the Dec.5, 2015 supplementary election.

He urged the court to return him as duly elected on the grounds that the Abubakar/Faleke ticket had already scored the majority votes of 240, 873 in the Nov.21, 2015 governorship election.

He contended that INEC acted in bad faith by declaring the election inconclusive because he (Faleke) should have been declared as governor after the death of Mr. Abubakar.

Similarly, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, in his lead judgment, gave reasons why the apex court dismissed the appeals by PDP and Wada.

“The testimonies relied on by the appellants relate to qualification of the first respondent (Bello) and his alleged failure to personally nominate a running mate.

“They have also challenged his non-participation in the Nov. 21, 2015 election and the combination of the votes and votes scored by late Abubakar.

“We join the tribunal and the appeal court to hold that the testimonies have no probable value,’’ he held.

Mr. Ngwuta said the concurrent decision of the two courts below was affirmed because the appellants had not advanced any reason for the apex court to hold otherwise.

“It is my view that the appellants did not prove a ground for this court to interfere with the concurrent findings of the trial tribunal and the court of appeal,” Mr. Ngwuta held.

NAN reports that the appeals filed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Labour Party (LP) on the elections suffered similar fate.

Okowa Says Burial Ceremonies Re Opportunities For Sober Reflection

DELTA State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has said burial ceremonies are opportunities for people to have sober reflection on their lives and have positive attitudinal change.
The governor made the statement  (30/09/16) at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State during a funeral Mass for Pa Gabriel Nwaka.

Pa Nwaka who died at 82 years was the father of the member representing Aniocha South constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Angela Nwaka.
According to Governor Okowa, "whenever we come to burial ceremonies, we should think about our lives, the real testimony is what name are you going to leave behind when you are gone."

"Look up to God, trust in Him, believe in Him, only then will people say you are a good man," the governor said, observing, "what we are doing today is celebration of the life of Pa Nwaka; to those of us who are here today, what will people say of us when we are gone?  This is very important because, nobody knows when death will come."

The governor used the occasion to call for prayers for Nigeria, asserting, "with prayers, our Lord will be able to deliver our country and our state, it is time we return to God and may God give us the grace to truly look up to God."

In a homily at the service, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Elue, Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese of the Catholic Church stated that nothing unclean will enter the Kingdom of heaven and that, "at the death of any Christian, we reaffirm our faith in resurrection, recall the baptism and implore God's mercy and commend the dead unto God's hands."

INEC DECLARES GODWIN OBASEKI WINNER OF EDO GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

INEC, ObasekiINEC has declared APC candidate, Mr Godwin Obaseki, as the winner of the Edo State governorship election which held on Wednesday, September 28.

After the collation of results from the 18 local government areas of Edo state in south-south Nigeria, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled a total of 319,483 votes while his closest from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osagie Ize-Iyamu, polled 253,173 votes.

The APC won in Akoko-Edo LGA, Ikpoba-Okha, Etsako West, Etsako East, Etsako Cenral, Owan East LGA, Ovia North LGA, Oredo LGA, Uhunwomnde,  Igueben LGA, Egor LGA, Owan West LGA.

The PDP won in Esan North Central, Esan West LGA, Orhionmwon LGA, Esan South East LGA, Esan North East LGA.

While the agent of the APC at the collation centre expressed satisfaction with the conduct and result of the election, describing it as the result of hard work, the PDP agent expressed strong reservation, referring to the result as a disappointment.

Prior to the announcement of the results on September 29, security officials had to form a barricade outside the INEC office in Benin City.

This was in order to prevent a breakdown of law and order as some protesters alleged that there was a change of results by the electoral commission.

PDP Candidate Rejects Result

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu has rejected the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

This was before the announcement of the final result by the commission.

The PDP candidate alleged inducement of voters and collaboration of INEC with the state government to doctor the results in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said that they decided not to wait for the full result to be called because they had already been informed about what was playing out.

PDP Won OREDO LGA: SECURITY OPERATIVES MUST ARREST ADAMS OSIOHMOLE's CHIEF THUG

1. Following the announcement of the results of the Edo State Gubernatorial Election for Oredo Local Government Area in which our Candidate scored a massive victory over the candidate of the Ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC), a known Thug and Enforcer of Governor Adams Oshiomole – Mr. Osakpanwam Eriyo (aka Nomoreloss) has invaded the Collation Centre along with several armed cohorts.

2. During this invasion, Mr. Osakpanwam Eriyo forcefully removed all result sheets used in collating results for the LGA. It is very worrisome that security agents acted in collusion with this Thug in his objectionable conduct.

3. The Nigerian public will recall that we have severally given warnings about the plan of the Ruling APC to attack LGA collation centres where they deemed the results of the elections to be unfavourable.

4. Further to this, we hereby call on the Inspector General of Police and the heads of the relevant security agencies to immediately arrest Mr. Eriyo and his accomplices. We also urge the IGP and other security agencies to immediately retrieve the Election Result sheets from this reprehensible fellow and return them safely to INEC to enable the Electoral Body complete the electoral process.

5. It is imperative that the Nigerian Police Force immediately arrests Mr. Eriyo as a means of building confidence in the electorate. Failure to do so may lead to people resorting to self help to enforce their rights which may in turn lead to a breakdown of law and order.

6. God bless Edo State. God bless Nigeria.
