IN view of Delta State’s Silver Jubilee and focus on solidifying the existing legacy of past leaders of the State, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said his government will work towards deepening the development fundamentals of the state, to make it the primus inter pares among the comity of states in the nation.

The governor who stated the resolve when he unveiled the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Logo and rolled out programmes to flag off the Delta at 25 anniversary celebrations, in a media chat at the Old Government House Press Centre, Asaba revealed that the celebration programmes will include; Delta Investment and Economic Summit, Music Concert, Grand Gala, Cultural Festival/ Beauty Pageant and a Thanksgiving Service.

He said in order to achieve a minimal cost celebration; an eight man anniversary planning committee which was set up, has since engaged Brand Eye, a top light marketing communication consortium, to assist the government in collaborating with the private sector; adding that the celebration will be purely private sector driven with minimal government financial commitment.

According to Governor Okowa who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, “25 years ago, many of us here were young men and women confronted with the normal adjustments of defining our place within the dictates of time and space. 25 years after, we have cause to celebrate our existence as a state, believing that there is sure but steady progression towards the up-liftment of human dignity and socio-economic development.”
He said the idea for the celebration of the Delta silver jubilee was motivated by the need to review the state of development of the state from inception, examine achievements made and explore the way forward for greater development.

“We therefore pause at this juncture to pay glowing tributes to the courage, ebullience, sagacity and doggedness of past leaders of this state in the persons of the first civilian Governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ibru, Compol Alhaji Abdulkadir Shehu, Group Captain Ibrahim Kefas, Colonel John David Dungs, Navy Captain Walter Fegbabo, Chief Onanefe Ibori, Honorable Bassy Asuquo, Rt Hon Sam Obi and Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan,” Mr. Ukah said.

Press Release Ikpeazu to Abians:

Remain calm and law abiding, am still your Governor I have received with concern, report of the purported issuance of Certificate of Return to Mr. Uche Ogah by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as governor of Abia State, despite dependency of a notice of appeal and motion for stay of the orders made by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Our laws are clear on this matter.
No one may be issued with a certificate of return let alone be sworn in as governor, when there is a subsisting appeal and application for stay.

I want to appeal to Abians to remain calm and law abiding in the face of this provocation, unless and until the appellant courts have conclusively resolve the appeal, the status remains, I am still the Governor of Abia State. Dr Okezie Ikpeazu Governor, Abia State..

What is happening to our legal system and democracy ?

Delta Lawmakers approve life imprisonment for kidnappers

The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday in Asaba approved life imprisonment for any person convicted of kidnapping in the state.

This followed the amendment of the Delta State Anti-Kidnapping Law 2016.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in a letter to the House appealed for reconsideration of Section 4, Sub-Section 1 of the Delta State Anti-Kidnapping Law, 2016 as passed by the House, which made provision for death penalty.

“The Right Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of the House are aware that death penalty is globally no longer fashionable as it breaches human right to life and torture, both of which are protected under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. Besides, there is heightened campaign and overwhelming support for the abolition of death penalty globally.

“Since the world is a global village, Delta State cannot be an exception, hence the passionate call to the House to reconsider the Section under reference and change the death sentence prescribed therein to life imprisonment.

The law approved life imprisonment for any person who contravenes section (3) of the Law.

“Any person who contravenes section (3) of this law commits an offence and shall on conviction be sentenced to life imprisonment without fine”

According to the law, “No person shall kidnap or detain another person or prevent another person from applying to a court for his release or from disclosing to any other person the place where he is being or prevent any person entitled to have access to another from discovering the place where he is held hostage with or without demand for ransom:

“Any person who initiates a compromise, settlement or refuses to give testimony in court in respect of offences charged under this law shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be liable to be sentenced to life imprisonment

“The owner of a property who knowingly lets or allows his property/ premises to another for the purpose of harbouring any person is guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be liable to life imprisonment and forfeiture of the said property to the State”
